• Human resources resume

Morning!

STOP RIGHT THERE AND PUT AWAY THE UMBRELLA!

Okay, okay, true, right now…you’re probably asking yourself:

Jeepers Barb, what umbrella?  And is it stylish?  Does it fit with my rugged maverick recruiter style as well?

Why, the umbrella to shield you from all the financial crashings that’s going on at various/sundry spots in the world, of course.

Think about it.  Unless you’ve turned into a fossilized clam and are currently residing in the Pre-Cambrian strata in the Grand Canyon, you’ve probably caught hurricane of wind of the problems that are besetting the world economy. 

And while that’s agonizing in the extreme, it doesn’t begin to touch upon the hell that you’ll soon experience should your recruiting business dry up faster than ice cream melts in the microwave.

So!  Are you preparing for the devastation your business will shortly encounter?

(and yes, I know the above is not definite…but forewarned is fore-prepared.  Or something like that).

Here are some ideas that might help.

Idea 1.)  Take stock of your industry.

Is your industry one in which there will always be interest, ie, sex?  (yes, the adult industry is always booming…and I’ll bet that the huge names residing there engage the services of recruiters as well).  Or perhaps:

• Health/fitness/pampering -  Even in down times, people will still focus on number 1….and wise individuals know the benefits of keeping the inner fires stoked.
• Blue-collar service – People will still need their cars serviced, their home’s electrical wiring operational, their hair cut, their bodies clothed…. business in this area should stay stable.
• Health care – Americans today eat worse than ever; healthcare will always be a need.
• Utilities – The energy industries will still be required to keep the lights on…and thus require skilled employees in that area.
• Debt collection/Bankruptcy – Need I say more?
• Luxury – Super-rich people are smart enough to have diversified their income.  Thus, their cravings for luxuries will remain unbated….can you recruiter superstar sales folk in the luxury industry?

If your industry is one that the economy decimates, you can always turn on a dime and become a subject matter expert in another, more profitable field.

Got that?  Okay, now jump to:

Idea 2.)  Take stock of your emotions

A smushed economy is a scary economy.  There’s nothing wrong with acknowledging fear and worry…there’s even nothing wrong with angsting powerfully over it for a few hours or two.

Honor your fears and honor your emotions by WORKING THRU the blasted things. 

Human nature being what it is….failing to recognize and deal with negative worries will only cause you more stress than skydiving without a parachute.

I’m not telling you to bury yourself under your comforter for the next 17 months of course….but I AM telling you, take the time to experience your worries and apprehension and then….

Let them go.

 

Thus, the next time you find yourself tempted to panic, you can remember….I already went thru this exercise! 

This lets your inner voice concentrate upon surviving and thriving, instead of dreading and trembling.

Remember – you CANNOT (you really can’t!) control how the economy happens…but you CAN control how you CHOOSE to react.

And that can make all the difference.

Next,

Idea 3.)  Take stock of your family

Work is delightful and work is peachy but work pales next to your family.  Keep them abreast of what you’re going thru!  Nobody has ever passed Mind Reading 101….so sharing your current adventures and telling your family, Okay!  This is where we’re at, here’s the changes we’re going to make, etc.etc.etc…..can go a long way towards not only making YOU feel more in control, but also keeping your family dynamics tilted towards the positive aspect.

‘course, you should always discuss with your spouse first prior to finalizing any decisions.

And finally,

Idea 4.)  Take stock of your personal inner spirit

Ever notice how your work shines with beauty and bottom line profits when you’re completely focused and determined to succeed no matter what?

A squooshed inner spirit can really destroy that possibility.

Thus, take time to treat yourself right! 

Give yourself permission to indulge in:

• "Me time" -  time in which you rejuvenate your spirits….my "me time" is spent working out and sparring in karate
• Personal treats for relaxing – Coffee, chocolate, chili-pepper soup….
• Music – music that speaks to your spirit generally soothes your psyche and allows you to unwind
• Friends – good friends are great sounding boards off of which to share.

Yes, the economy is going to heck in a handbasket…but that doesn’t mean you have to crash alongside with the ride!

Be proactive and honor your abilities.  Your future bottom line will thank you for it.
