Morning!
And how are you today? Thanks so much for swinging on by my blog – I hope the day has been treating you well!
Today’s topic of the day is the excruciating joys of finding free resumes online. Excruciating, because quite frankly, free resumes are a dime a dozen, but hey….uncovering free resumes on the Internet always does seem to be a popular goal for recruiters and sourcers even to this day. I’d be remiss not to demystify it.
So! Before I delve into the esoteric agonies of the above, let me first reveal the following common-sense tip that you probably already know:
Resumes are only ONE aspect of online candidate sourcing gold.
Other opportunites that will suggest themselves include:
- Amazon.com reviews
- Associations
- Authored papers
- Business notifications in local newspapers
- Diversity groups
- Chamber of commerces
- Expos
- Industry blogs (and comments on said industry blogs)
- Industry competitions
- Organizations
- Personal websites
- Social Networking (like LinkedIn, Facebook, Plurk, etc.etc.etc.)
- Trade show listings
- User groups
etc.
Thus, keep in mind that even IF a bona fide resume is NOT revealed by your searching, you might have dug up something equally important.
With that in mind, let’s begin with:
Find free resumes in Google
Here, you’d want to use the time-tested joys of Boolean searching coupled with Google’s Search operators. These search operators include:
- filetype: (you can specify filetype:pdf to return only PDF files)
- intitle: (you can specify the word "resume" to show up in the title tag, ie, intitle:resume )
- inurl: (you can specify the word "resume" to show up in the title tag, ie inurl:resume)
- site: (you can limit your searches to specific sites like site:ibm.com "employee directory")
Quite frankly, there’s lots of ways to combine Google operators in various nifty and cool ways like:
(constructing that previous search and then fine-tuning it as well for industry-niche resumes is outlined in detail over at my RISE Knowledgebase Recruiter membership site).
Google is rather neato and coolio because not only can you find free resumes and the like, you can also find RESPOSITORIES of free resumes and CONTACT information of your targeted candidate base as well.
Find Free Resumes in Scribd
Scribd is a document respository. Jim Stroud wrote a super tutorial on uncovering free resumes there you can access at the aptly-titled post:
Jim is a wealth of recruiting information – do visit his site TheRecruitersLounge and sign up for his RSS feed! It’s definitely well-worth it.
Find Free Resumes in Resume Books
Colleges and universities will often compile a resume book of their graduating students. A simple search like
will result in many. However, I personally prefer searching specific universities like so:
Quite often, student associations will compile unofficial resume books or other ways to highlight their grad students/graduating seniors; you simply have to be alert for them.

Hopefully by now, you’re probably thinking to yourself,
"Hmmmmm. Free resumes are one thing….but targeted quality resumes apparently are something else!"
Sure, it’s quite easy to find free resumes online, it simply takes giving yourself permission to master the ins and outs of boolean searching and the like.
But remember….Time is Money. If you’re a third party recruiter and don’t already have a super network of candidates into which you can tap….it might make more sense to invest in niche job databanks to save yourself the time required for searching.
Targeted industry niche job databanks can be found at:
I cannot caution you enough, however, about the following.
Once you find a potential candidate….how DO you approach him or her?
The art of First Contact with active or passive candidates is one easily learned…and greatly enhanced by your own web presence online. That, however, will be the topic of another post….methinks this one is getting a weeee bit lengthy on it’s own.
I hope the above resources have given you some nifty ideas about finding free resumes online! Please do feel free to let your recruiting colleagues and friends know about this post – they’ll thank you for it.
Enjoy,
Barbara Ling
