Morning all,
Great minds truly think alike!
I just finished reading Maureen’s insightful post entitled: What would you do if the Internet went away? To wit:
…Think it can’t happen to you? Ha! I live in Ohio and on Sunday, September 14 at about 1 p.m. an ill wind started to blow in from the southwest. I was pulling weeds in my garden when the angry, dark and low-lying ominous clouds began to pass quickly overhead. Straightening, I watched as the 100-plus year old maple trees in my front yard began to sway crazily, dropping debris from their branches that began to blow mightily back into the nooks and crannies I had just cleaned out. I turned my attention to battening down the patio furniture, not that my feeble efforts turned out to do much good in the face of Mother Nature.
Within an hour the wind gusts were approaching 75 miles per hour – 75 miles per hour! Never in the history of the area’s weather keeping have we had winds like that! ….MORE….
Do yourself a favor and visit her post – it’s most readable indeed.
Anywhos, this particular post tickled my fancy because that’s what happened to me at 3am this morning. Yes, it is true – I awakened to write at 3am only to discover….
Zee Internet, zee was down!
No connectivity whatsoever. I was reduced to having to (gasp!) work OFFLINE!
Tell me now…as a recruiter/HR professional, what would YOU have done?
It’s always tempting to panic when that upon which we rely….high-tails it to the far distant hills of Not Your Home or Office. But not to fear! I always view such things as an opportunity to regroup and pounce onto a different direction.
Me, well, here’s what I did:
- I wrote the chapters that didn’t require hyperlinking.
- I then fired up Photoshop to create some images for future blogs.
- Then I reviewed my past articles (I always keep local copies) to see how I could be inspired for when the Internet DID return.
It turns out in my case, our cable provider was toast and we had a town-wide outage. Then we decided to switch from cable to Verizon, which turned out to be yet another adventure of TMOTC (The Smooshing of the Connectivity). Even more wheee’s!
Needless to say, I got one heap of writing done…and done well.
Which brings me to the point of this post!
Are you prepared…should YOU happen to lose connectivity?
Preparation comes in the form of backing up your data, taking advantage of a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) and other thingees as well. I’ve found the following good resources for you:
- 2008 Data Backup Reviews
- Backup Tips: Keep Your Data Backups Safe, Simple, and Fast
- Data Backup to Prepare for Disaster
- Prepare a kit to see you through power outage
- Preparing Computer and Cellular Networks For a Hurricane
- Preparing for Power Outages
I hope you find the above useful! Remember, while recruiters can truly benefit from the Internet, the telephone can also be just as useful a tool. Never let your business be halted because of trivial problems like connectivity – always be able to turn on a dime.
Enjoy,
