Morning!
Today I had the delightful experience of waking up and reading Jim Stroud’s excellent post regarding finding passive candidates via their username handles. He reveals to his readers the tool UserNameCheck, a nifty beastie that simply queries bunches of social networking sites to see where a particular username is taken.
Jim’s idea for using this to track down where passive candidates lurk is spot-on! I’d also like to add another nifty trick regarding user names, handles and even (gasp!) real life names can be applied - that of simply monitoring Google News Alerts.
Gosh, I must have at least 70 news alerts about which I keep track!
Not only do I track my name and my company, I also track my username, my login, my email, and the same for dozens of my friends to boot.
Apply this now to you! You always want to know when you’re being discussed online…AND, if you’re currently tracking a particular passive candidate, you always want to know when that person is highlighted on the Internet. Just think….if a promotion was obtained, you could proactively send a Congrats! note or card, thus re-inforcing your brand in their mind.
Using Google News Alerts is very simple. Just type in what you want to track! For example, let’s say that you’re desperate to place Steve Jobs in his new dream position….you could track
"(Steve | Steven | Stephen) Jobs"
and whenever a news item appeared that contained:
- Steve Jobs
- Steven Jobs
- Stephen Jobs
You’d proactively be alerted. (Oh, and btw, the pipe signs between the words signify to Google that you’re looking for an OR boolean construct).
So! Let’s say you’ve uncovered the username of a quality passive candidate - you can plug that into UserNameCheck, and then create a Google News alert for it as well. Voila - you’ll be delivered timely updates as they occur and as they relate to your candidate.
And that, of course, can only be described as a Very Good Thing indeed.
Enjoy,
