Morning! Here’s an utterly inane question for you:
Have you ever heard of Twitter?
I know, I know, but hey, it does get me to the next point of this post.
Twitter is the extremely popular microblogging platform that all savvy Web 2.0 individuals now worship. When it works, it works really really really well! Alas, when it doesn’t, the Web 2.0 world we know and adore crumbles to a heap…and you are treated to the image of the flying whale you see on this post.
Now, this adorable sea creature is called The Fail Whale. To wit:
...Twitter users are very familiar with the iconic image of the Fail Whale. This social object has been latched onto by Twitter fans not just as a representation of Twitter’s downtime, but also as a representation of the community’s love for the service and their hope for its triumph over their many struggles. Despite Twitter’s troubles, most of its users stayed true, watching and waiting as the team began the long process of recoding the application in order for it to scale up. As Twitter succumbed to the strain of running their under-provisioned service, the Fail Whale "over capacity" image would appear. And this image began to take on a life of its own. This is the story of the Fail Whale….MORE….
(keep in mind the Fail Whale is NOT to be confused with the Twitter Budgies, those mathematically inclined avian wonders who venture into parallel universes to solve all manners of Twitter problems like the one below:
Okay I confess, those ARE indeed MY budgies and yes, it’s true their education at Harvard University might have been a wee bit…ahem….enhanced? But admit it – the humor at that site makes up for it bigtime.
).
But I digress.
Anywhos, as you’ve seen from the Fail Whale story, that icon is quite well-known online! So imagine my surprise yesterday when I came across the following tweet:
Did you catch that?
TinyUrl is on the whale!
Being "on the whale" is now a valid Web 2.0 witticism!
Which brings me to the topic of this post.
One, be alert now to the phrase "on the whale." You can sound like a savvy Web 2.0 recruiter should you comment that when, oh, gee, I don’t know, your favorite Candidate database returns the resumes of solely Herbalife distributors.
And Two, always but ALWAYS make certain your OWN recruiting services can NEVER be described as whale-bound!!
Twitter makes telling the world about problems encountered easier than melting ice cream in a steel furnace that’s been staffed by fire-breathing dragons.
You do NOT want your recruiter/client/candidate services to be talked about in that fashion!!
Remember, the popularity of Web 2.0 services for recruiters and candidates alike make communications much easier than the Talk of bygone eras … and thus customer satisfaction and dissatisfaction is far more prevalent online than it used to be.
Always ensure your services are topnotch and attract no whales….your recruiting bottom line will thank you for it.
Enjoy,
Barbara Ling
