The wave of the future
Very easy to understand and implement
⇒⇒ Recruiting 2.0Less technical, more human. The "Web 2.0" is very simple to understand. Let's first talk about its predecessor, Web 1.0. In a nutshell, "Web 1.0" is all about customers interacting with providers. Okay we talked about it. :-) Web 2.0 is about *people* interacting with *people* (who then ultimately give recommendations for sites/products). Let me take you on a trip down memory lane. Back when the Internet was gaining popularity, there was Microsoft and the Internet Explorer as the browser, and AOL as the main service provider. With me so far? Alrighty. As the years moved on (would you believe IE debuted around 1996?), more and more functionality was being added. People could view images and the browser wouldn't break if there was a typo! Search engines emerged. Check out what Yahoo used to look like a decade ago here! In essence, a typical website was built with static, straight html. The years swayed on by... and more and more people came to the web. This meant the number of potential customers grew and grew. People would visit search engines, find resources for their needs and then go visit those. They were happy. The webpages were simple. If someone wanted their own homepage, they'd get one with their ISP subscription or grab a site on Geocities.
That was Web 1.0For recruiters, web 1.0 means using boolean queries in search engines for passive candidate finding, sending/receiving individual emails thru their outlook/ATS, etc. In other words, recruiters interacted with *products* from passive candidates (resumes on the Internet, resumes submitted, found email addresses, etc.). With me so far? When you think 1.0 in recruiting, or the Internet, think:
==> People interacting with a service. But 2.0! With 2.0, you're now adding in the *human element*. The Internet no longer is dominated by home pages you visit and leave, or search engines where you find your answer in one search!
The Human Element.Instead, today's Internet focuses heavily upon *the human interaction aspect*. Anyone can now become a valued voice online by starting and marketing their own blog! Would you believe, even CEOs have their own blogs - look at
Think about this. All of a sudden, anyone can get popular. Anyone can comment on a blog (for the most part). Anyone can generate a following. This is part of Web2.0. And search engines! Did you know that not everyone finds things nowadays in search engines? Many people will now search *blogs* for relevant content...and there are search engines that are dedicated solely to that like Technorati, Digg etc. Entries here gain visibility by *popularity*. Did you hear that last remark? Probably not, as you're reading instead! But it bears repeating:
This is truly part of Web2.0. How does one gain popularity? By people telling others about the stories or entries! By networking! Socially! By social networking! Social networks are a big part of web 2.0 too. In essense, the Web 2.0 model centers around harnessing the *collective* intelligence of its users. It *engages* the active participation of its users. It encourages the sharing of links, pictures, information, recommendations and the like.
How To Apply This To Recruiting 2.0Recruiting 2.0 embraces all of what Web 2.0 offers. It has no fear! Instead of merely searching for passive candidates online via search engines, it uses:
Recruiting 2.0 centers upon the candidate/client/relationship as a whole. To gain passive candidates, 2.0 recruiters provide authority sites for their clientele...so said clientele starts spreading the word about their services to their colleagues. Recruiting 2.0 recruiters tap into the power of Web 2.0 and become a centerpoint for their forte. This is one of the main thrusts of RISE. I've been mastering the Web 2.0 applications now for years...and have designed the entire RISE curriculum around it. This article gives some of my opinions about 2.0 in relation to Monster.com . Thus, the next time you hear "2.0" - don't be nervous or think, eeek, new jargon! Instead, simply think... Less technical, more human.
